 "Great Birthday Gift" 2009-03-15
By E. Ristaino (Cornelius NC)
My husband gave me this watch for my birthday. I wanted an atomic watch. I wanted accuracy. It changed time without me messing with anything when the time changed last weekend. It is attractive and not too large for a small woman's wrist.

"This is a GREAT watch" 2008-12-24
By John D. Kelner
I almost didn't buy this watch because of the one crappy review. I have had two waveceptor watches and only bought the second because my first didn't have analog and digital. I love both. And now SOLAR?? Batteries are $9 now. They last me 3 years or so, but I have had my recent watch for 10 years. This 'seemed' to be the way to go for my girlfriend who says her $200 watch never has the right time. I almost didn't buy it. And I did buy it. I opened the box and damn, it was at 12:00. DOA I figured. I should have listened. And the second it hit light, it set itself to the right date and time and works perfectly. Ok, everyone can have a bad experience. I had a good one. It goes into hibernation mode after a few days (which explains the 12:00 and the come back to life). I am 'charging it' under a halogen light for a few hours before re-boxing it. I am almost hoping that it goes into hybernation mode. It's amazing to see reset. Every watch should have this. Sorry but even expensive Rolex watches have the wrong time after a while. These NEVER do.... until the battery does. Oh, did I mention, no batteries in this. And the time to recharge for daily use is - well, if you don't live in a cave... it should be perfect.

 "Good after pump-priming" 2010-01-10
By Andrew Ellis (Lafayette, CA USA)
I was concerned how good the coverage would be from the WWVB 60 kHz transmitter in Fort Collins, CO, that this watch uses. My home is over 900 miles (1500 km) from it.

Once you set your time zone, the watch tries to sync itself five times during the overnight (On Pacific Standard Time, it happens on the hour starting at midnight.) The watch reports whether it synced correctly, and on which attempt.

The first few nights, no sync. But after I forced a manual sync, which failed, the automatic function started working! No explanation for why it happened that way, but it did. Since then, it manages to sync about 75% of the nights, and that's while it's on my wrist, not placed in a window as the manual suggests.

The result is that the watch is always correct to the second, compared with a GPS master clock system at my work.

I'm very satisfied with this product.

 "A great watch for pool/sports" 2009-07-21
By RSRCHB4UBY (CA USA)
This is a nice looking, comfortable watch that has more functions than I need.

I purchased this watch for the pool and it works great for this purpose. The user interface is very intuitive: I was able to figure out all functions without opening the manual.

I particularly like the automatic time set function. The watch receives a radio signal from the US atomic clock daily and sets the correct time automatically.

Overall, I am very happy with this watch, and at fewer than thirty dollars I consider it a great value.

 "5 Star expectation; 4 Star reality" 2009-08-19
By A. M. Springer (Penn Valley, CA USA)
Rather than reiterate what other 4 star reviewers have provided, and they are spot on, let me tell you a little more. I am a watch guy as is my son, who as a 24 year Air Force guy who really is into super complicated chrono's. My tastes are more basic than his and when I saw this very well featured Casio Atomic available for only $250, I ordered it. A few nits to pick are that it is very difficult to size and also complicated to set up with very small indices and a miniature sized manual which is hardly bigger than a match book. Anyone remember what those are?

Be very careful when re-sizing! Even if you are fairly well skilled at this and have professional style tools, including a pin remover, the Casio pins employ a minuscule sleeve style keeper that is placed inside the drilled tunnel of the inner/male side of the link. Super caution must be taken not to loose these itty bitty micro-sleeves when pushing out the pins. If lost, you will NOT be able to re-secure the pins. Unlike other brands such as Citizen who use flared ends on their link pins, Casio has what I would consider an inferior design and it is very unfriendly to novices. Not skilled? Take it to a jeweler.

As to setting up the watch, well let's just say first that you need very good eyesight and perhaps a magnifying glass. The instructions are just OK and unless you've been through similar drills before, you may need to repeat steps. Pushing button "A" for about 5 seconds and waiting to hear a 'beep' is a lesson in frustration tolerance and unless you have super hearing, forget the beep...unless you are holding the watch to your ear. However, after going through all the set up steps (more than once) the watch runs beautifully thereafter. Remember, this is a perpetual calendar watch so the original set up is critical to being in the right year, month and date. Miss a step and you may need to make monthly adjustments for short months and days of the week.

Once it is properly set, however, this is a deadly accurate and quite good looking timepiece with lightweight durable construction. It's the best Solar Atomic Analog Chronograph for the price. If you're a digital person there are other choices but for my money, traditional analog is still better looking than any digital display. If the small dial is a problem for your eyes, you may be better off looking at an alternative Citizen model but be prepared to pay more.

 "Love the watch!" 2009-04-07
By GoBlueFan (Worthington, Ohio USA)
Legendary G-shock ruggedness combined with analog 5-motor display. This is solar and atomic, so I never have to worry about adjusting the watch (even for daylight savings time)or having to open the case to change the battery. When I first got the watch, I got paranoid when it didn't sync with the time signals from the "atomic clock" at Fort Collins, CO. I finally figured out that it syncs best if you leave it face up on a table. Now it syncs every night and I am not near Colorado (I live in Ohio).

The stainless steel bracelet needed to be sized so I took it to a jewelry store. I felt funny since it was a fancy store with $70,000 Patek Phillipe watches and Rolexes for sale, but the salesperson adjusted the band for free. I did buy a band pin tool from Amazon to try to adjust the band myself, but haven't been brave enough to try to use it.

Pros:

Excellent time keeper-I use this to set my other watches and clocks

Excellent overall appearance of case and band

Cons:

Display a little small, and the surrounding bezel obscures part of the dial markings. The markings themselves are very small and difficult to read.

Average lume, so just OK for night time display.

The deployment clasp on the band does not lie flush with the bracelet. Not sure why, but it does seem secure.

 "Good Watch - a few glitches" 2009-03-20
By Shaka Zulu (Los Angeles CA USA)
OK, I received this watch (bought it not seeing it in person) from Amazon a few days ago and have been playing with it. A few points not mentioned in any review or blog that I've read about the MTG1000-9A.

1. Yes the watch case is big (~44 mm), but the watch face under the crystal is not that big (I measure 28 mm diameter). Thus, all the markings in the dial are smaller than you'd expect in a big 44 mm watch. So if you have eyes over 40 yrs. old, it's a struggle to read the lettering under 1 mm in size.

2. Gold on black color scheme of watch is very cool, but the world city names/time zones around the dial are in faint gold paint on a black background and sub 1 mm in size, so they are very hard to read at least for me.

3. Stopwatch can only time events up to 1 hour. If you want to time a 2-hour exam, or a 90 minute parking meter, you can't use the stopwatch. Countdown timer starts at max of 1 hour so you cannot count down from longer than that either. Kind of disappointing for me.

4. Stopwatch does not beep when you push start or stop. No way to turn on a beep either. Since the pushbuttons also do not have a tactile click, it's difficult to know when the stopwatch has been started or stopped except by looking at the moving hands.

5. As someone else mentioned, a minor nitpick: moving from home time to world time or alarm set time requires the big minute and hour hands to slowly spin around the dial, and takes a bit to get to their intended locations.

6. Smallish dial is sunken into watch face and raised plastic bezel around crystal creates the feeling of looking into a deep well. Because of this, even less light gets to dial face and again, makes deciphering the tiny sub 1 mm markings challenging unless watch is under bright light.

8. No LED backlight like in the Casio MTG1500. The luminous paint used here is OK, but Casio should have used Superluminova paint for a $200-$300 watch.

7. On plus side, plastic and stainless steel combination looks great, appears to be rugged. Very nice adjustable metal band with solid links. Exposed machine screw heads make the watch look of quality. Despite being 44 mm wide and 14 mm thick, watch is very light and comfortable to wear. I live in Southern California so time synch with Fort Collins was easy. Finally, every watch hand aligns with their tick marks precisely; none of that misalignment you see in $1500 Swiss Tag quartz watches.

"not a disappointment at all!!!" 2009-02-25

this has to be one of the better "everyday" watches i've ever purchased thus far. as you can see it's a "sporty" watch with a casual look to it so it looks great for wear on most occasions. you never have to worry about setting the time no matter where you go 'cause it sets itself (kinda like your cable box)!!!

all in all, it's the perfect watch to have and wear for "everyday" purpose.

"Beware of Buying Watches from Amazon.com" 2009-02-07
By Learned a Lesson (Alabama USA)
I bought the Casio G-Shock MTG as a gift for my son from Amazon.com for $288.58. Shortly thereafter I found the same watch advertised on and sold by Amazon.com for $250.00. I called the customer service number to ask for a price match and a credit of $38.58. Instead of getting someone to address my concern I had to speak to a person in an Indian call center who wasn't the least bit interested in listening to what I had to say. I asked to be transferred to someone with authority in the US who understood English, which they refused to do. Now I'm out $38.58 plus the 26 minutes from being placed on hold and dealing with a customer non-service representive. Buyer beware!

"Arrives with the correct time and stays that way." 2009-12-15
By Chris Heinbokel (New Jersey, USA)
I've thoroughly enjoyed wearing this watch. Though it's a little thicker and bulkier than its predecessor, the added atomic timekeeping makes it well worth the added size. It's easy to read, and the automatic light (tilt your wrist to look at your watch and it lights up automatically) is a phenomenal feature. The strap is durable and has a metal clasp, and the watch face is slightly recessed below the rim of its bezel, which seems to protect it from most bumps and scratches. Out of a vast array of watches, atomic timekeeping and the automatic light make this Casio stand out from the crowd.

I almost forgot to mention - the solar panels on the watch face mean you'll never have to change the battery. As long as the watch is exposed to a decent level of sunlight (or florescent light), it'll keep a charge. There's a little battery indicator on the watch face, but it's nothing to worry about; just wear it and it'll charge. At night, if you take the watch off, it's got a power-saving feature where if it doesn't detect motion (I have no idea how it does this, but it seems like magic) for a set period of time, the watch face shuts off to save power. When you put it on in the morning or if you keep it on your wrist, it'll turn on and stay on. It's rather neat.

 "disappointing" 2009-11-27
By Alexey R. Olkov (Honolulu, HI USA)
First of all, the signal doesn't reach Hawaii, even though I've read that it should (in a certain time of day), second, I could never figure out how to get the signal when I was on the mainland (Cali, Nevada, Oregon).. But it's not the worst part. The battery died on me after about 7 months of use. Mind you, it is solar-powered and I live in &@#$^%# HAWAII!!! The only good thing it was not that expensive.. I will try putting it out on the sun tomorrow for like the whole day, and maybe it will charge a little. Still.. highly disappointing.

"How can an atomic watch be difficult to set?" 2009-11-21
By Burt Kaufman (Austin, TX USA)
I had seen people review this model watch, solar powered/atomic clock setting at the lowest price point, and was amazed by the claims that it was difficult to set. If you are satisfied to have it display the time in your time zone it is fairly easy to do. But the difficulty is in the setting of the 12/24 hour time and DST On/Off/Auto, in that it does not respond much of the time to a press of the appropriate button. If you are persistent you will succeed, but if you are easily frustrated find some one to help you.

It is truly simple for simple settings, so do not fear this watch, and if you are in range of an atomic clock over most of the world it will do the job simply and reliably after adjustment.

Another small point: this watch has a fairly long buckling band on it, and it fits my 8.5 inch wrist rather well, with room to spare, about 9" max, i'd guess, and no hassle with adding segments to a stainless steel bracelet. (the band is an industrial plastic of a type similar to the Remington plastic rifle stocks they are currently making. Not beautiful, but strong enough.)

So on the basis of fit, it gets a five, my wrist has an indentation from a former watch that had two additional links inserted, on the basis of ease of use, it gets 3 out of 5, with the caveat that it can indeed be difficult to set, to the owner's satisfaction. For strenght and appearance it is a 4/5 now and may rise higher over time, since it is solar/light powered, it needs no batteries, you do need to replace the seals in the watch every 2 or 3 years to keep it water proof to a mfger 330 ft rating. All in all a true bargain. If it lasts 2 years it is still a 4 out of 5, if it lasts longer it will go up accordingly...

"Very convenient watch for everyday use" 2009-11-10
By Jaroslaw Kaczynski (Henderson, NV United States)
Some time ago I have sworn that I will only use solar-powered watches that synchronize time with atomic clocks. Initially only quite expensive and 'stylish' models were available, but wearing a timepiece worth several hundred bucks while doing work around the house makes you constantly worried that you scratch precious thing.

This watch is under $100 and has all the benefits of its more expensive 'brothers':

- Solar powered quite efficiently - with normal daily exposure to light I'm always at the 'max charge' level (of course living in sunny Nevada helps here).

- Time synchronization with the 5 radio transmitters all over the world (USA, England, Germany, Japan*2). I frequently travel to visit family in Europe, so USA and England/Germany transmitter sync is important to me. Many watches in the US only sync with USA transmitter or USA and Japan; the latest models just started supporting new China transmitters; this one is the perfect balance for me.

- Time signal reception is excellent in Nevada, bot inside the buildings and outside. From my previous experiences it should mean good reception throughout the West Coast and (maybe!) some problems inside solid-construction buildings in New England and Florida.

- Unlike some cheap models of watches and clocks, this one reads Daylight Savings Time data straight from the radio signal, so it 'springs ahead' and 'falls back' at the correct dates. Some older clocks have hard-coded DST transition dates and are confused after the recent DST changes in the USA.

- I love 'Auto EL' feature: the watch turns on Electro-Luminescent backlight for two seconds when it is dark and the wearer positions hand appropriately. Perfect for the movies, night flights and similar situations.

- I usually prefer metal bands, but resin band in this model is surprisingly good quality and wears OK.

- Button operation seems to be reliable so far.

- The glass is scratch resistant and placed recessed in the metal panel - so far I managed to keep it clear, which is unusual for me.

Amazon had the best price for this item, better than Fry's and Casio website. The watch arrived on time and in good shape.

"A really nice watch, BUT the start is IMPORTANT!" 2009-12-10
By Gerhard Moeller (Calamity Creek, TX)
I love this watch! That said, 1 hour after unpacking it I was convinced it was broken

and ready to send it back. NOT SO FAST! This watch is SOLAR powered. Yes it can maintain a sufficient

charge to function for one day if under flourescent light for 8 hrs, but its delivered to you after being in a totally

dark box (a cute Casio can) for a few months at least! Mine arrived with the display blank and the

analog hands frozen. No problem I thought..just a few minutes under a hologen lamp

and I'm good to go...right. Not so much. I read the "Home time zone" and "Manual time

setting" sections of the manual and proceded to push the appropriate buttons. Chaos. Nothing

responded acording to the manual. The problem.....not enough juice. When you get this watch

you should put it in direct sunlight (outdoors preferably) for 6 to 8 hrs. before attempting

anything...and I mean anything. Then and only then go first to page E-34 of the manual and

set the "Home Position" of the hands. Then go to page E-49 and set your time zone and local

time manually. Then, after dark, try a "manual receive" of the atomic time. I say after dark

because unless you live within 600 miles of Clorado, you probably will not get a satisfactory

signal during daylight. THEN, READ THE ENTIRE MANUAL. Yes it is small print and somewhat

difficult to decifer. But you cannot enjoy or controll this timepiece without understanding the

operating system. Complicated?....perhaps....worth it?....YOU BET! This watch will last you

a lifetime and you'll never need to replace a battery, worry about dailight savings changes or

leap years or 30-31 day month settings and never need to set the time. Only occasionally

will you need to do maintainance of exact hand position. Once FULLY charged (27 hrs direct

sunlight) this watch will maintain itself with ambient daylight and office flourescent light.

Beware the "tilt backlight feature"....this really sucks the power and is not really useful

after the Gee-wiz factor wears off. ENJOY!

My favorite feature is the auto light, the dial will light when you tilt your wrist to view it.
