 "Good after pump-priming" 2010-01-10
By Andrew Ellis (Lafayette, CA USA)
I was concerned how good the coverage would be from the WWVB 60 kHz transmitter in Fort Collins, CO, that this watch uses. My home is over 900 miles (1500 km) from it.

Once you set your time zone, the watch tries to sync itself five times during the overnight (On Pacific Standard Time, it happens on the hour starting at midnight.) The watch reports whether it synced correctly, and on which attempt.

The first few nights, no sync. But after I forced a manual sync, which failed, the automatic function started working! No explanation for why it happened that way, but it did. Since then, it manages to sync about 75% of the nights, and that's while it's on my wrist, not placed in a window as the manual suggests.

The result is that the watch is always correct to the second, compared with a GPS master clock system at my work.

I'm very satisfied with this product.

 "A great watch for pool/sports" 2009-07-21
By RSRCHB4UBY (CA USA)
This is a nice looking, comfortable watch that has more functions than I need.

I purchased this watch for the pool and it works great for this purpose. The user interface is very intuitive: I was able to figure out all functions without opening the manual.

I particularly like the automatic time set function. The watch receives a radio signal from the US atomic clock daily and sets the correct time automatically.

Overall, I am very happy with this watch, and at fewer than thirty dollars I consider it a great value.

"Arrives with the correct time and stays that way." 2009-12-15
By Chris Heinbokel (New Jersey, USA)
I've thoroughly enjoyed wearing this watch. Though it's a little thicker and bulkier than its predecessor, the added atomic timekeeping makes it well worth the added size. It's easy to read, and the automatic light (tilt your wrist to look at your watch and it lights up automatically) is a phenomenal feature. The strap is durable and has a metal clasp, and the watch face is slightly recessed below the rim of its bezel, which seems to protect it from most bumps and scratches. Out of a vast array of watches, atomic timekeeping and the automatic light make this Casio stand out from the crowd.

I almost forgot to mention - the solar panels on the watch face mean you'll never have to change the battery. As long as the watch is exposed to a decent level of sunlight (or florescent light), it'll keep a charge. There's a little battery indicator on the watch face, but it's nothing to worry about; just wear it and it'll charge. At night, if you take the watch off, it's got a power-saving feature where if it doesn't detect motion (I have no idea how it does this, but it seems like magic) for a set period of time, the watch face shuts off to save power. When you put it on in the morning or if you keep it on your wrist, it'll turn on and stay on. It's rather neat.

 "disappointing" 2009-11-27
By Alexey R. Olkov (Honolulu, HI USA)
First of all, the signal doesn't reach Hawaii, even though I've read that it should (in a certain time of day), second, I could never figure out how to get the signal when I was on the mainland (Cali, Nevada, Oregon).. But it's not the worst part. The battery died on me after about 7 months of use. Mind you, it is solar-powered and I live in &@#$^%# HAWAII!!! The only good thing it was not that expensive.. I will try putting it out on the sun tomorrow for like the whole day, and maybe it will charge a little. Still.. highly disappointing.

"How can an atomic watch be difficult to set?" 2009-11-21
By Burt Kaufman (Austin, TX USA)
I had seen people review this model watch, solar powered/atomic clock setting at the lowest price point, and was amazed by the claims that it was difficult to set. If you are satisfied to have it display the time in your time zone it is fairly easy to do. But the difficulty is in the setting of the 12/24 hour time and DST On/Off/Auto, in that it does not respond much of the time to a press of the appropriate button. If you are persistent you will succeed, but if you are easily frustrated find some one to help you.

It is truly simple for simple settings, so do not fear this watch, and if you are in range of an atomic clock over most of the world it will do the job simply and reliably after adjustment.

Another small point: this watch has a fairly long buckling band on it, and it fits my 8.5 inch wrist rather well, with room to spare, about 9" max, i'd guess, and no hassle with adding segments to a stainless steel bracelet. (the band is an industrial plastic of a type similar to the Remington plastic rifle stocks they are currently making. Not beautiful, but strong enough.)

So on the basis of fit, it gets a five, my wrist has an indentation from a former watch that had two additional links inserted, on the basis of ease of use, it gets 3 out of 5, with the caveat that it can indeed be difficult to set, to the owner's satisfaction. For strenght and appearance it is a 4/5 now and may rise higher over time, since it is solar/light powered, it needs no batteries, you do need to replace the seals in the watch every 2 or 3 years to keep it water proof to a mfger 330 ft rating. All in all a true bargain. If it lasts 2 years it is still a 4 out of 5, if it lasts longer it will go up accordingly...

"Very convenient watch for everyday use" 2009-11-10
By Jaroslaw Kaczynski (Henderson, NV United States)
Some time ago I have sworn that I will only use solar-powered watches that synchronize time with atomic clocks. Initially only quite expensive and 'stylish' models were available, but wearing a timepiece worth several hundred bucks while doing work around the house makes you constantly worried that you scratch precious thing.

This watch is under $100 and has all the benefits of its more expensive 'brothers':

- Solar powered quite efficiently - with normal daily exposure to light I'm always at the 'max charge' level (of course living in sunny Nevada helps here).

- Time synchronization with the 5 radio transmitters all over the world (USA, England, Germany, Japan*2). I frequently travel to visit family in Europe, so USA and England/Germany transmitter sync is important to me. Many watches in the US only sync with USA transmitter or USA and Japan; the latest models just started supporting new China transmitters; this one is the perfect balance for me.

- Time signal reception is excellent in Nevada, bot inside the buildings and outside. From my previous experiences it should mean good reception throughout the West Coast and (maybe!) some problems inside solid-construction buildings in New England and Florida.

- Unlike some cheap models of watches and clocks, this one reads Daylight Savings Time data straight from the radio signal, so it 'springs ahead' and 'falls back' at the correct dates. Some older clocks have hard-coded DST transition dates and are confused after the recent DST changes in the USA.

- I love 'Auto EL' feature: the watch turns on Electro-Luminescent backlight for two seconds when it is dark and the wearer positions hand appropriately. Perfect for the movies, night flights and similar situations.

- I usually prefer metal bands, but resin band in this model is surprisingly good quality and wears OK.

- Button operation seems to be reliable so far.

- The glass is scratch resistant and placed recessed in the metal panel - so far I managed to keep it clear, which is unusual for me.

Amazon had the best price for this item, better than Fry's and Casio website. The watch arrived on time and in good shape.

 "Good Watch, Cool Features" 2009-10-23
By NILADRI MUKHERJEE (NEW JERSEY, USA)
This is a nice & cool watch. like any other Casio watch it gives accurate time. The auto time sync feature is really cool & it works perfectly. But I had hard time setting it up to work for the first time. It syncs with the atomic time only in the mid night & my watch did it in the third night :). There after it does it automatically I do not monitor it any more.

 "Alarm Sound is useless" 2009-09-15
By G. Herron (California, USA)
Casio has been my favorite watch since they started making them. I've had them most of my life. However, it seems that all the one's coming out now have such a low sound on the alarms or for chimes for on the hour is useless. You would have to have the thing next to your ear to hear it. If you were asleep, forget it. I love everything else about their new line. Everything works great but that. Too bad as it was the real deal breaker.

"Nice watch with band issue" 2009-08-05
By L. Ott
The face of the watch is very nice and the time is in big print. The date maybe hard to read for people with poor vision because is small. I can read it but don't my parents could without glasses. My watch had no issues with syn with the radio signal. The only complaint (why 4 not five stars) is that I have is the band seems cheap, although is secure to the watch well. I am used to the g-shock bands so it maybe just be different. I will wait a few days but will most likely replace the band at walmart. In all I am very happy with the watch for the price.

 "Great watch" 2009-06-17
By J. Aceti (Washington Crossing, PA)
Having used this watch for about six months I can say it is very dependable, durable and a great value. Living in PA unfortunately does not allow the atomic clock syncronization to take place - apparently we are too far from the Colorado timing source. Also dispite my advanced degress - getting this watch to do anything other than tell time is always a refferal back to the operator's manual.

"A Shame About the Battery, I Would Have Worn it Forever" 2009-09-30
By Andrew Cox (Tallahassee, FL United States)
I bought this watch in the fall of 2003. Unlike others, I have had no major problems with it until about a month ago, when the battery lost its ability to take any kind of charge. Up until that time, the only things that went wrong with the watch were due to its daily use. I had to replace the watch band a couple of years ago, and the blue backlighting went out about a year ago, but I consider both those to be expected, especially considering I used it daily for 6 years. The small things on watches just wear out with heavy use; I accept that.

These issues aside, I was very happy with my watch purchase. I learned how to use the watch and appreciated the fact that it was ALWAYS on time. Since I work a lot with satellite timing in my job, that was a very welcome feature. I also liked the multiple time zone settings and automatic Daylight Savings Time adjustment, (that is, until the stupid Government changed the DST rules for no reason a few years back). Like most people here, I had absolutely no use for the time record feature. I would MUCH rather have had a countdown timer instead.

The one thing that always bugged me when reading the (huge) owners manual for this watch was Casio's claim to unlimited battery life due to the solar feature. This is simply not realistic. Current battery technology produces a battery that will last up to 5-6 years before the chemicals inside start to oxidize and lose their effectiveness. Even if the battery lasts much longer than that, many other electronic components inside the watch only have an expected lifespan of 10 years or so. Either way, you will be buying a new watch within a decade or so-much sooner than the manual leads you to believe.

All told, I am still glad I bought this watch, and I am not disappointed at the battery life, as it worked as long as I realistically supposed it would. However, now that I'm in the market for a new watch, I will hold out for an atomic solar watch with a countdown timer feature.

 "Built like a tank..." 2009-08-08
By G. Brockett (lacey, wa United States)
I purchased this watch about 5 years ago and am finally getting around to reviewing it.

This is the quintessential bus driver's watch. That's what I did for a living at the time. In an agency of 2600 drivers, this is by far the most popular watch that doesn't have the company logo on it, I will go into the reasons for that later.

I actually purchased the watch for use with a sextant (!) I wanted the time-stamp function on top of the atomic set time. The solar was a plus but did not finalize the choice.

I have only had the battery level go below "High" once, due to riding my motorcycle for a month straight in the winter.

Key features that influenced my purchase:

- Atomic clock set (from Colorado)

- One touch time-stamp function

- Solar powered

- 5 alarms (1 "Snooze", 4 Reminders) (Loud enough to wake me)

Bonus features I discovered or started using later.

- Optional auto light

- Multiple timezones

- Stopwatch

- Rugged

Now, for a bus driver the functions that are truly important are:

- Atomic set - Always being set properly

- Auto light - You can check the time in the dark one handed

- Time Stamp - record the time of an event for a later report

I ran the battery down the one time because I had auto-light turned on and was wearing gauntlets when outside. the light kept coming on and it rarely saw the sun. I learned that trick and got the battery re-charged over a couple of days.

I love this watch, it has lasted longer than any other watch I have owned. The face is un-scratched and the band is nearly original condition, but the housing shows real world experience; the chrome parts have worn down to the plastic in spots, there are gouges in the rubber housing parts, the buttons have worn in ways that indicate where my nails have pushed on them, the lettering on the outside of the case is no longer filled with pigment. It has character.

I now work in more of a technical field, and am considering getting a more formal watch but am unable to give this one up.

If you can find one, this is a wonderful work watch especially if you work nights.

One disclaimer, a co-worker has one about the same age and it won't take a charge anymore. After all, they are based on a chemical battery, so will likely die after a while.

"Tough and Accurate for a Few Years" 2009-04-10

I give this item two stars based on the battery performance. Recharging the solar battery only works less than a month after two years of use. That said, I'm giving solar one more shot with a new AWG101-1A. If I get the same results I'll quit buying Casios.

 "Great Watch" 2007-08-16
By Miteymitey (East Texas)
I've now had my GW 300 for about a year. It's one great watch. I'm a paramedic and work on an ambulance so it gets some rough treatment from time to time, but it's never let me down. As others have noted, it's a rather large watch and sticks up up off my wrist about 1.5 cm's. And it's not particularly flashy or sexy. But it does keep very accurate time, and that, to me, is the primary function of a watch.

The only problem I've ever had with it is the feature that activates the backlight with wrist movement. It doesn't always work when I would like for it to, but on those occassions I can push the button to activate the backlight.

I too have a wall mounted atomic clock in my home. It is amazing to watch the two change time together, down to the second.

There is just nothing quite as neat as knowing that the time on your wrist watch is totally accurate. I like it.

I have had this watch for a couple of years and just now it is becoming unreliable. The battery is down to low and the watch will not function even though I have tried charging this solar watch. I have contacted Casio about the problem and am waiting. Before you buy this watch do a seach on Google and and type in GW300 problems and you will see hundreds of people who have had battery problems. Otherwise this has always been

MY FAVORITE WATCH !!! I never took it off til just recently. Thankfully I have many other Casio and other watches as back up !!!

I've been a Timex guy for decades, but I'll have to say this watch is better than any Timex I have owned. It is rugged, not too big, easy to read, and best of all -- totally maintenance free. No setting the time ever, no changing batteries EVER. Some commented that the alarms are not loud enough, but I have found them to be fine. They will wake me up from the dresser across the room. My only complaint is that the buttons (especially the set) are a bit difficult to push. Also, the band might be hard to replace WHEN it breaks, because it will eventually if you use it daily. The backlight is fine if you are just checking the time, but too short if doing any functions requiring more than just a glance.

However, for now, I am greatly enjoying my new watch!!

This is the second G-Shock watch I own. I like its "multi band 6" feature because I often go to Europe and China to visit my relatives. All I need to do is to set home city and this watch automatically synchronizes to local radio signal. Other features include solar powered (no battery change is needed), shock resistant, and tough watch band, etc.

This watch receives radio signal 6 times per day. Once it synchronizes successfully, the remaining auto receiving operations will not be performed. I live in DC area, and I have no problem receiving radio signal. Most times it succeeds at the first attempt around 12:04am.

Overall I think this watch has all the features a watch is supposed to have. If you'd like to have a watch as a jewelry and don't care about accuracy, go buy a Rolex.

A friend of mine just purchased a more expensive dressy looking watch and it is always wrong.

I would like to see Casio make something with all these features in a dress watch, but you can't go wrong with the reliability of Casio.

 "Titanium PAW500T Casio watch" 2009-10-09
By 12review (USA)
Casio Pathfinder Solar Atomic Watch #PAW500T-7V

Casio Pathfinder Solar Atomic Watch #PAW500T-7V

I bought this watch after about 1 month of internet research.

The watch I wanted had to be not bulky, with a metal band (All my plastic bands

broke within 3 years and leather bands damaged within 2, so the band had to be metal),

with real mineral glass, water-proof etc etc. For a while MOMENTUM SLK

appealed to me until I've read the glass on them can break too easily due to

it not being recessed and protected enough.

In the end I had only one model to chose from, Casio PAW500T-7V.

PROS

-Balanced looking.

-Titanium watch and band. I would rate this watch as "ultra light for the size".

If you are thinking between this and the plastic version, no need to think very long.

Even the demanding owners who hate bulky watches would likely be happy after

buying the titanium version.

[small comment: the band looks solid titanium, but it is pressed sheet titanium, folded

to look solid. For me it's not a problem.]

-It is not a small watch. On the overall watch market, its place is among medium-sized and large (!)

men watches. Casio markets it as female not because PAW500T is small, but because it is

much smaller than the grossly oversized other pathfinders.

-Internal precision of mine is outstanding. The watch came to me being 7 secondes ahead of time, with last atomic

calibration date 5 month back. About a second error per month running without atomic calibration.

Even my upper-end Oceanus watch has 10 sec/month internal error.

-Barometer, altimeter and thermometer work great after calibration.

Barometer is completely in agreement with published pressures. Correctly predicted

a hurricane two days in advance (large pressure drop). Correctly predicted clear sky for a week

(large pressure increase). The watch was correct. The [...] was not -

it said "80% chance of rain", "rain", "cloudy" and there was sun.

Some people mentioned that altimeter is too variable and insensitive.

I think this altimeter is fine. Like all altimeters, it needs to be calibrated

to current pressure. If one does not calibrate, no wonder he reads +/- 300-feet day-to-day

difference for the same location. That's how all altimeters work.

-Easy to size bracelet. No special tools needed, only a needle or a small

knife. The links are held by spring-supported retractable tiny rods. The band has arrows which point

where knife tip fits to move the rods. For me it was very easy and I am amused that

somebody wrote he had problems. Needed skill level: 1 out of 5.

CONS

Alarm sound is too soft and short. A plus is that there are 5 alarms, so one could

program them in succession.

Backlight duration is 0.5 second. Would be better if there was a user setting to adjust

backlight duration.

VERDICT

This watch is one of a kind, and if lost or stolen, will be replaced with the same.

The checklist:

Digital watch

Solar battery

Atomic time keeping

Very nicely outlined display with "time+month+year+date" or "time+day_of_week+date" options

Big digits that do stand out

Small size (H=35mm x W=38mm size by my ruler, don't know how Casio measured 41mM...)

Light weight titanium case

Titanium case and band

Mineral glass

Dual time (must have for me)

World time

Electroluminescent backlight

100m water submersible

Thermometer

Barometer

Altimeter

 "Great watch from Casio" 2009-09-10
By Rohit Tole (India)
Its been a while now since I am using this watch. This watch is a sure fit for the small and medium size wrist. Its marketed as ladies watch, but it looks quite well on men. Surprisingly this watch is much lighter compared to similar watches from other brands. Also it looks well made. The display is logical and perfect. It shows the most important information in larger easy to read format. All the important features are just few button push away. You can indeed configure many things on display like baro graph or date format and even Altimeter display.

Barometer is quite accurate after I calibrated it. Thermometer is affected by the body temperature. So you really need to take the watch off your wrist and keep it away for 15 to 20 mins to get an accurate measurement. Again you can calibrate the thermometer too.

I tested the thermometer under various conditions and it was precise.

Altimeter is disappointing. Altimeter reading depends on pressure and temperature and constantly changes. So you have to calibrate altimeter with a standard source right before you start using it everytime.

In summary I recommended this watch to anyone who is looking for reliable and techno watch at a very affordable price.

PROS -

1) Nice and clean display arrangement

2) Lightweight watch

3) Titanium band which is gentle on skin

4) Thermometer and Barometer Graph for weather prediction

5) Automatic display back light function (useful if you are driving or your hands are full)

6) Automatic time synchronization through Radio signals (no need to adjust time)

7) Solar powered (never need to worry about about battery change)

CONS -

1) Titanium band gets scratched easily

2) No compass or moon/tide graph (should not be a problem though)

3) Alarm is not loud enough.

 "Atomic Watch" 2009-08-31

It did everything it advertised to do. I do wish there was an option to buy it with the band sized. I had to take it to a local watch repair firm and paid to have it sized.

 "A lifetime to master!" 2009-08-09
By Camera Dan (New York)
As excited as I was to recieve the watch in the mail from amazon, I could'nt wait to use it features, including it's thermometer and altimeter reader. Once I first put the watch on, it was very hard to understand all the features that came with the watch, that is one reason why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. All of it's settings can become difficult to understand how to use, especially with someone who is not "talented" with electronics and that sort. However after reading for about an hour or so in the manual, some things starting to become clear to me on how to use this watch. I am impressed, with it, but it will take time before I can master the watch to learn all that it has in store for me.

 "An Excellent Watch" 2009-07-14
By C. Muehlberger (San Clemente, CA United States)
Although the watch may be a little large for most women, it is perfect for what I use it for. It obviously keeps perfect time. And the different functions are not too difficult to figure out. It also looks great.
