"Casio Pathfinder Solar Powered watch" 2009-08-19
By William A. Lamar (Keytesville, Mo. U,S.A.)
So far I'm well satisfied with the watch. This is my second Casio, the first one was just a plain digital watch that lasted 26 years, it was only opened three times, the first two times was to replace the battery, the third time the man said it died. I hope this one does as good.

- It could charge fully when summer came.

- Is better for people who really spend time in the nature

By Ronald J. Herisko (Palm Springs, CA)
Unfortunately, I had to return this item for defectivve quality. It dropped infor settings after two days. It was extremely hard to press the setting buttons, tjhe manual was inferior for intstructoipnal purposes. For example, it said you can use 12 hour or 24 mode for the digital watch but did not expalin how to set it from one to the other. It arrived blank and could not get it to respond until I removed and reinstalled the battery. Later, 2 days later the battery showeed low again and blanked out all teh settings. Could not get it back. REturned it for credit.

By D. BERRY (Afgnaistan)
Excellent watch. Does everthing I need it to do and keeps the correct time. I like the features and the initial setup was simple. The functions are simple to use and unlike my Suunto Metron when I want to know the altitude, barometric pressure or direction I don't have to push buttons until I get the right function to come up. It was cheaper than the Suunto with more functions. Plus it is a little more rugged to withstand the current environment I am in.

Great watch, easy to use. I love the smaller size of this pathfinder the most. Very comfortable to wear all day long. I have used it on several 10+ mile hikes and it has the best features that really work. Amazon had the best prices with the fastest shipping.

The overall watch was really great. All of the applications were cool and worked well. The only problem I had with it was because it was HUGE. I had my 6'3" brother put it on his wrist and it was sooo big for him. I bought it for my 5'10" boyfriend and returned it after seeing how big it was.

 "Very nice looking watch!!!" 2009-01-22
By Chris (Monterey Bay, Ca.)
Well I bought this watch not to long ago. I really love it! I got it so I can use it when i go snowboarding in back country! I have found it very useful! It is a great looking watch. I'm not a watch wearer so it took me some time to get use to it. (But feels better then any-other watch i have had in the past). But the only question I have for this watch is can I use it in salt water? And there are 2 different depths it says on this page! 100m(330f) and 200m(660f) and that is a big difference! I am taking a diving course at my college and i am wondering if I can use it for light diving under 600 feet! Or if I can use it at all in salt water! Its a really cool watch and I always find my self playing with it! GREAT FOR THE MONEY$$$$

 "Beautiful watch, but..." 2009-01-10
By J. Schindler (Durham, NC)
How could a watch that has all of these features not have a stopwatch? That's right - despite what the description says above, this watch does *not* have a stopwatch. I ordered this from another site for about $130 (actually got it as a xmas gift) and was shocked to see it didn't have a stopwatch. In addition, it didn't have multiple daily alarms, which I find very useful. I've had an older Pathfinder watch with all these features, and I guess just assumed this would have it also (never checking the fine print). Don't get me wrong, this is a beautiful watch and a big upgrade from the older, more bulky models, but it's gotta have a stopwatch. I ended up sending it back and getting the PAW12001V for $100 - it has everything this watch has plus atomic time keeping, stopwatch, and 5 daily alarms - it doesn't look quite as good, but for the features and the savings, it's well worth it.

 "Poor service" 2009-08-29
By Michael O'Connell
I had 2 major problems when my Casio PAW500 watch arrived. One was that the alarm and timer emitted no sound, and other was that the altimeter varied by over 100 feet as I stood still and took successive readings.

But the major problem is repair and support. Their web site forces you to choose the problem from a list, but my problem wasn't there. When the watch was returned, same problem, so I sent it back. The web site tracking system that Casio has showed a mismatched combo of the first repair trip and the second one, and they emailed me that the watch was fine and was being returned. I waited a week and emailed them to find out why I didn't have the watch, and they told me that it had just been sitting there. If I hadn't asked about it, it would probably still be sitting on their shelf somewhere. When I finally got it back, I tested the alarm signal, and finally realized that the tone was so weak that I could barely hear it if I held the watch to my ear. And my hearing is fine. They also told me that the altimeter operated within specifications.

I've bought my last Casio product.

 "A good all-round watch." 2009-01-30
By Daniel Berke (CA)
I have had this watch for about two months now, and am quite happy with it. Compared to my old watch (a very cheap Casio) it is much better.

There are several points, specifically, that attracted me to this watch:

1. Its overall durability. The strap, for instance, instead of connecting directly to the body, connects to a little hinge that prevents it from being broken off(the way it did on my old watch).

2. Multiple alarms (5, to be exact). Very useful for when you need to store several times.

3. 24 hour count-down timer. Useful for all sorts of little things.

4. Solar power and auto-synchronization. No more batteries to worry about (although people in more northerly latitudes will probably have to give it an occaisional boost with indoor lighting), and you know that it's never far off from the correct time(according to the product specs, it's accurate to about a half second per day, so even if you can't synchronize every night, it's no big deal). I haven't had too much trouble with getting it to synchronize each night, either. As long as it points towards a window, it seems to be fine.

5. The barometer, altimeter, and thermometer are nice extras, although I don't rely too much on what they say. You can calibrate them to be more exact, but I haven't really felt a need to do so. The barameter readout of the pressure over the last few hours is handy, as it can inform you of a low pressure system moving in.

Overall, I found this watch to be just what I expected, a sturdy watch with enough extra functions (stopwatch, timer, alarms, etc) to be useful, without becoming so complicated you need a degree to use it. Its size is a good fit for my medium-sized wrist, and is relatively unobtrusive. Congrats to Casio for making a such a great product.

 "Casio PAW500-1V Review" 2008-12-16
By B. Wong (Tucson, Arizona)
I selected this model of Casio since it is slightly smaller and lighter than the models with the directional features. It is a tough watch that you can get wet and drop. The temp, barometer are great for fishing along with solar power and exact time syncing. Probably my only complaint is that you have to adjust the temp calibration due to the sensor being close to your body. I found that if i take it off and take the temp the reading is more accurate. For $150 - well worth the value.

 "Great Watch!" 2009-06-05
By Robert C. Bickle (New Hope, PA United States)
I received this watch as a gift from my Amazon Wish List and I could not be happier. As a Backpacker and Pilot, this watch ahs the functions that I want and I never have to worry about batteries, winding, or if it is accurate. Although the manual is large, once the watch is set up it is easy to operate and I have not had to refer back to the manual since the first day.

The watch is a bit bulky, but very light. The numbers are very easy to read on the main face for those of us that have passed into our 40's and need the support of reading glasses, though the text around the face is very small and I can not read it without the assistance of my reading glasses.

One note is that the watch does not do a continuous compass function. It takes a reading and then locks. I guess the point is to take a heading reading on a fixed point. It would be a nice feature if you could choose between continuous compass readings and a read and lock.

 "Great, BUT!!!" 2009-03-07
By Arnold E. Miller (Chicago)
As a previous Pathfinder owner, I passed my original Pathfinder on to a relative and purchased this new model. Everything was as expected with one MAJOR PROBLEM. I like using the hourly signal and the alarm setting. YOU CAN NOT HEAR EITHER CHIME TONE, NOT THE HOURLY OR ALARM. Granted, it does work, if you are holding it to your ear. I called Casio support and they told me that there was no volume adjust. My previous Pathfinder, even with the watch under my jacket sleeve, the hourly signal and alarm chime could be heard. The chime on this model is useless. I am very disappointed. If the volume can be adjusted on other models, why not on this one??

"It's not for just any baby to play with!" 2008-08-01
By M. Price (Palm Beach , Florida)
I haven't read any other reviews before the one listed here and I sure didn't before I bought it and I paid a helluva lot more than the price listed here at Amazon. I bought this very same watch before it was available to the general public when I was working in Hawaii, I had always wanted an attractive not too bulky watch with all the features for a true get away from society explorer's wet dream. This watch is definitely the answer, if you figure out electronics even ones with a complex set of multi functions like this one then you won't need it's nearly 300 page mini manual yes nearly three hundred pages. While it is true that it dosen't wipe your butt for you like some people think expensive, brainy electronics should do. If you are an avid explorer and aren't afraid of pushing a few buttons sometimes more than once then you could find no better watch but if you don't like depending on technology to do it's job and would rather use a stick then by all means do so. Just don't pick the wrong kind of plant when using the bathroom. The compass feature does stop reading after 20 seconds but guess what you can always press the compass button again. The point behind getting a compass reading is that you can check and recheck your headings, Factually, I wouldn't trust a compass who told me only one way to go as it actuates. Now, Moving on to a couple of the other features, like altimeter, have you ever wondered how many meters above the ground you were in an airplane, yeah I did too, found out too, it's really freaky to watch how fast a plane drops when descending. Barometer function does take a little bit of explaining I would suggest reading the manual if only for this caveat, Thermometer I would like to say this was really acurate while being worn but alas I don't think there is a skin liked device that can give you an accurate room temp without taking into account body temp. However if you take it off and let it naturalize you can get a realistic reading in either celsius or farenheit. The five different alarms are great if you are one of those whom need constant waking up in order to get going. Or for setting alarms for different time zones, another cool feature is the world clock, ever wondered what time it is in Tokyo, when you are having your tea and crumpets in South London. All in all it is a great watch, get it at this much cheaper retail price if you like it.

"Get lost easier than ever!" 2008-06-03
By C. Mann (Hamptons, NY)
I just received my Casio Pathfinder via UPS 10 minutes ago, and boy! Was I excited! Why did it take only 10 minutes for my excitement to fade? This weekend, I will be taking my motorcycle to Lake George, NY. It's about 250 miles through unfamiliar territory. I wanted to ride like the rebels. No GPS, just me, a map and my trusty compass.

Well, I may be a rebel, but I love gadgets. Especially gadgets I can wear on my wrist that will show me just where I'm going. At $250, the PAW1100T-7V is pricey, but what do you expect to pay for a watch with a compass, barometer, altimeter, and just about every other meter you need for biking/hiking/boating/etcetaing.

Awesome! Awesome if you're going somewhere less than 20 seconds away, that is. You see, I just got off of the phone with Casio after realizing the compass stopped moving after pressing the compass button. It seems the watch is not broken, and no, some half-wit didn't change the default settings. The compass reads for 20 seconds, then locks.

Who would buy a compass that didn't update? I can find a stick and point it north, and this watch has about as much purpose. Don't buy it if you really need a compass, especially if you're doing something which requires your hands/attention free. I don't believe all the reviews I read didn't mention this!

To be fair, this is not the only watch which will stop working after a short period. I don't know if its because of power consumption, but this watch is solar powered anyway.

 "Titanium PAW500T Casio watch" 2009-10-09
By 12review (USA)
Casio Pathfinder Solar Atomic Watch #PAW500T-7V

Casio Pathfinder Solar Atomic Watch #PAW500T-7V

I bought this watch after about 1 month of internet research.

The watch I wanted had to be not bulky, with a metal band (All my plastic bands

broke within 3 years and leather bands damaged within 2, so the band had to be metal),

with real mineral glass, water-proof etc etc. For a while MOMENTUM SLK

appealed to me until I've read the glass on them can break too easily due to

it not being recessed and protected enough.

In the end I had only one model to chose from, Casio PAW500T-7V.

PROS

-Balanced looking.

-Titanium watch and band. I would rate this watch as "ultra light for the size".

If you are thinking between this and the plastic version, no need to think very long.

Even the demanding owners who hate bulky watches would likely be happy after

buying the titanium version.

[small comment: the band looks solid titanium, but it is pressed sheet titanium, folded

to look solid. For me it's not a problem.]

-It is not a small watch. On the overall watch market, its place is among medium-sized and large (!)

men watches. Casio markets it as female not because PAW500T is small, but because it is

much smaller than the grossly oversized other pathfinders.

-Internal precision of mine is outstanding. The watch came to me being 7 secondes ahead of time, with last atomic

calibration date 5 month back. About a second error per month running without atomic calibration.

Even my upper-end Oceanus watch has 10 sec/month internal error.

-Barometer, altimeter and thermometer work great after calibration.

Barometer is completely in agreement with published pressures. Correctly predicted

a hurricane two days in advance (large pressure drop). Correctly predicted clear sky for a week

(large pressure increase). The watch was correct. The [...] was not -

it said "80% chance of rain", "rain", "cloudy" and there was sun.

Some people mentioned that altimeter is too variable and insensitive.

I think this altimeter is fine. Like all altimeters, it needs to be calibrated

to current pressure. If one does not calibrate, no wonder he reads +/- 300-feet day-to-day

difference for the same location. That's how all altimeters work.

-Easy to size bracelet. No special tools needed, only a needle or a small

knife. The links are held by spring-supported retractable tiny rods. The band has arrows which point

where knife tip fits to move the rods. For me it was very easy and I am amused that

somebody wrote he had problems. Needed skill level: 1 out of 5.

CONS

Alarm sound is too soft and short. A plus is that there are 5 alarms, so one could

program them in succession.

Backlight duration is 0.5 second. Would be better if there was a user setting to adjust

backlight duration.

VERDICT

This watch is one of a kind, and if lost or stolen, will be replaced with the same.

The checklist:

Digital watch

Solar battery

Atomic time keeping

Very nicely outlined display with "time+month+year+date" or "time+day_of_week+date" options

Big digits that do stand out

Small size (H=35mm x W=38mm size by my ruler, don't know how Casio measured 41mM...)

Light weight titanium case

Titanium case and band

Mineral glass

Dual time (must have for me)

World time

Electroluminescent backlight

100m water submersible

Thermometer

Barometer

Altimeter

 "Great watch from Casio" 2009-09-10
By Rohit Tole (India)
Its been a while now since I am using this watch. This watch is a sure fit for the small and medium size wrist. Its marketed as ladies watch, but it looks quite well on men. Surprisingly this watch is much lighter compared to similar watches from other brands. Also it looks well made. The display is logical and perfect. It shows the most important information in larger easy to read format. All the important features are just few button push away. You can indeed configure many things on display like baro graph or date format and even Altimeter display.

Barometer is quite accurate after I calibrated it. Thermometer is affected by the body temperature. So you really need to take the watch off your wrist and keep it away for 15 to 20 mins to get an accurate measurement. Again you can calibrate the thermometer too.

I tested the thermometer under various conditions and it was precise.

Altimeter is disappointing. Altimeter reading depends on pressure and temperature and constantly changes. So you have to calibrate altimeter with a standard source right before you start using it everytime.

In summary I recommended this watch to anyone who is looking for reliable and techno watch at a very affordable price.

PROS -

1) Nice and clean display arrangement

2) Lightweight watch

3) Titanium band which is gentle on skin

4) Thermometer and Barometer Graph for weather prediction

5) Automatic display back light function (useful if you are driving or your hands are full)

6) Automatic time synchronization through Radio signals (no need to adjust time)

7) Solar powered (never need to worry about about battery change)

CONS -

1) Titanium band gets scratched easily

2) No compass or moon/tide graph (should not be a problem though)

3) Alarm is not loud enough.

As excited as I was to recieve the watch in the mail from amazon, I could'nt wait to use it features, including it's thermometer and altimeter reader. Once I first put the watch on, it was very hard to understand all the features that came with the watch, that is one reason why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. All of it's settings can become difficult to understand how to use, especially with someone who is not "talented" with electronics and that sort. However after reading for about an hour or so in the manual, some things starting to become clear to me on how to use this watch. I am impressed, with it, but it will take time before I can master the watch to learn all that it has in store for me.
