 "5 Star expectation; 4 Star reality" 2009-08-19
By A. M. Springer (Penn Valley, CA USA)
Rather than reiterate what other 4 star reviewers have provided, and they are spot on, let me tell you a little more. I am a watch guy as is my son, who as a 24 year Air Force guy who really is into super complicated chrono's. My tastes are more basic than his and when I saw this very well featured Casio Atomic available for only $250, I ordered it. A few nits to pick are that it is very difficult to size and also complicated to set up with very small indices and a miniature sized manual which is hardly bigger than a match book. Anyone remember what those are?

Be very careful when re-sizing! Even if you are fairly well skilled at this and have professional style tools, including a pin remover, the Casio pins employ a minuscule sleeve style keeper that is placed inside the drilled tunnel of the inner/male side of the link. Super caution must be taken not to loose these itty bitty micro-sleeves when pushing out the pins. If lost, you will NOT be able to re-secure the pins. Unlike other brands such as Citizen who use flared ends on their link pins, Casio has what I would consider an inferior design and it is very unfriendly to novices. Not skilled? Take it to a jeweler.

As to setting up the watch, well let's just say first that you need very good eyesight and perhaps a magnifying glass. The instructions are just OK and unless you've been through similar drills before, you may need to repeat steps. Pushing button "A" for about 5 seconds and waiting to hear a 'beep' is a lesson in frustration tolerance and unless you have super hearing, forget the beep...unless you are holding the watch to your ear. However, after going through all the set up steps (more than once) the watch runs beautifully thereafter. Remember, this is a perpetual calendar watch so the original set up is critical to being in the right year, month and date. Miss a step and you may need to make monthly adjustments for short months and days of the week.

Once it is properly set, however, this is a deadly accurate and quite good looking timepiece with lightweight durable construction. It's the best Solar Atomic Analog Chronograph for the price. If you're a digital person there are other choices but for my money, traditional analog is still better looking than any digital display. If the small dial is a problem for your eyes, you may be better off looking at an alternative Citizen model but be prepared to pay more.

 "Love the watch!" 2009-04-07
By GoBlueFan (Worthington, Ohio USA)
Legendary G-shock ruggedness combined with analog 5-motor display. This is solar and atomic, so I never have to worry about adjusting the watch (even for daylight savings time)or having to open the case to change the battery. When I first got the watch, I got paranoid when it didn't sync with the time signals from the "atomic clock" at Fort Collins, CO. I finally figured out that it syncs best if you leave it face up on a table. Now it syncs every night and I am not near Colorado (I live in Ohio).

The stainless steel bracelet needed to be sized so I took it to a jewelry store. I felt funny since it was a fancy store with $70,000 Patek Phillipe watches and Rolexes for sale, but the salesperson adjusted the band for free. I did buy a band pin tool from Amazon to try to adjust the band myself, but haven't been brave enough to try to use it.

Pros:

Excellent time keeper-I use this to set my other watches and clocks

Excellent overall appearance of case and band

Cons:

Display a little small, and the surrounding bezel obscures part of the dial markings. The markings themselves are very small and difficult to read.

Average lume, so just OK for night time display.

The deployment clasp on the band does not lie flush with the bracelet. Not sure why, but it does seem secure.

 "Good Watch - a few glitches" 2009-03-20
By Shaka Zulu (Los Angeles CA USA)
OK, I received this watch (bought it not seeing it in person) from Amazon a few days ago and have been playing with it. A few points not mentioned in any review or blog that I've read about the MTG1000-9A.

1. Yes the watch case is big (~44 mm), but the watch face under the crystal is not that big (I measure 28 mm diameter). Thus, all the markings in the dial are smaller than you'd expect in a big 44 mm watch. So if you have eyes over 40 yrs. old, it's a struggle to read the lettering under 1 mm in size.

2. Gold on black color scheme of watch is very cool, but the world city names/time zones around the dial are in faint gold paint on a black background and sub 1 mm in size, so they are very hard to read at least for me.

3. Stopwatch can only time events up to 1 hour. If you want to time a 2-hour exam, or a 90 minute parking meter, you can't use the stopwatch. Countdown timer starts at max of 1 hour so you cannot count down from longer than that either. Kind of disappointing for me.

4. Stopwatch does not beep when you push start or stop. No way to turn on a beep either. Since the pushbuttons also do not have a tactile click, it's difficult to know when the stopwatch has been started or stopped except by looking at the moving hands.

5. As someone else mentioned, a minor nitpick: moving from home time to world time or alarm set time requires the big minute and hour hands to slowly spin around the dial, and takes a bit to get to their intended locations.

6. Smallish dial is sunken into watch face and raised plastic bezel around crystal creates the feeling of looking into a deep well. Because of this, even less light gets to dial face and again, makes deciphering the tiny sub 1 mm markings challenging unless watch is under bright light.

8. No LED backlight like in the Casio MTG1500. The luminous paint used here is OK, but Casio should have used Superluminova paint for a $200-$300 watch.

7. On plus side, plastic and stainless steel combination looks great, appears to be rugged. Very nice adjustable metal band with solid links. Exposed machine screw heads make the watch look of quality. Despite being 44 mm wide and 14 mm thick, watch is very light and comfortable to wear. I live in Southern California so time synch with Fort Collins was easy. Finally, every watch hand aligns with their tick marks precisely; none of that misalignment you see in $1500 Swiss Tag quartz watches.

"not a disappointment at all!!!" 2009-02-25
By Amari Grant
this has to be one of the better "everyday" watches i've ever purchased thus far. as you can see it's a "sporty" watch with a casual look to it so it looks great for wear on most occasions. you never have to worry about setting the time no matter where you go 'cause it sets itself (kinda like your cable box)!!!

all in all, it's the perfect watch to have and wear for "everyday" purpose.

"Beware of Buying Watches from Amazon.com" 2009-02-07
By Learned a Lesson (Alabama USA)
I bought the Casio G-Shock MTG as a gift for my son from Amazon.com for $288.58. Shortly thereafter I found the same watch advertised on and sold by Amazon.com for $250.00. I called the customer service number to ask for a price match and a credit of $38.58. Instead of getting someone to address my concern I had to speak to a person in an Indian call center who wasn't the least bit interested in listening to what I had to say. I asked to be transferred to someone with authority in the US who understood English, which they refused to do. Now I'm out $38.58 plus the 26 minutes from being placed on hold and dealing with a customer non-service representive. Buyer beware!

It works pretty good, the only problem I have with this product is having to set it down for recharging. I also find it difficult to read the Time some times, the face is too dark and it is also too close to the shade of the numbers.

 "Impressive watch" 2009-09-19
By J. Bookwalter (Virginia Beach, VA USA)
This is a very nice watch! I like the solar re-charge feature, the sync with the national atomic clock, the black and gold colors and the link band. It was starting to cost me over a hundred dollars just to change out the battery in my Citizen watch every other year. This watch will take care of that problem by not needing a battery change. Good. Very good! Only one problem with this watch - the dark color. It is sometimes a little hard to read the face of the watch. I figured this would happen. I bought the watch because of the black and gold. The watch has a back light - both manual and automatic - and is light sensitive to save the battery. Dark, it will light, outside day time it won't automatically turn on.

Great watch. Note that this model watch comes in several colors.

This is a really good watch that is not only stylish, but rugged. Manual is well written. Only downside to this watch is the display is a little difficult to read under certain light conditions/glare and angle. I often find the need to luminate the display during daylight to see the time.

Watch looks great and tough. Work right out of the box, but did require a day of being in light to be fully charged. The finish seems solid and I have no scratches yet. The resink works fine and my other Atomic Solar Casio matches this one to the second each morning. If you want a distinctive look with the correct time this is a good choice.

"Had it for years, love it ..." 2009-10-03
By Douglas C. Meeks (Huntsville, Alabama USA)
I have had this watch for at least 2 years (sorry can't remember exactly when I got it) but I bought it at Sam's Club for pretty much the same price Amazon has it for and I can tell you that it is without a doubt the best watch I have ever owned. I have seen some reviews complaining about the black rubbing off in places and all I can say is that after all this time mine has like 98%+ of the finish and looks good. The time is always accurate and my watch syncs up about 4-5 AM CST every morning and yes some mornings it does not sync, uh like thats of no value unless you need micro-second accuracy every minute of the day. If it syncs only once a week its going to have the correct time within a second so that complaint is just stupid. I can attest to one problem, it has a feature that allows the backlight to come on when you turn your wrist (nice function late at night in bed or other low/no light situations), BUT use this function VERY sparingly since it will run your watch DEAD in a few days or less in most places (maybe not in the desert). I love the guy who subtracted stars because the "book was too small" WTF, this is a review of a watch, what you expect, a 8" X 11" ???? Anyway, I highly recommend this timepiece with one exception for me and that was as a runner, I bought a cheap Timex that has a stopwatch and a big button for backlight and is lightweight for that use since this is a big watch and somewhat heavy as watches go but not uncomfortably so except in the above situation. Love never having to do anything to a watch except wear it, BTW it sets itself to DST automatically unless you turn that function off (why would you do that, but it allows it) 4 Stars easy .....

"Stylish, stealthy and easy read display" 2009-05-12
By Gauteng (VA, United States)
I like Casio's G-Shock line but often I find the styling too exuberant and too full of orthogonals or "Transformer" like bulges. This watch has a more organic shape to it and because of the blacked out legends and monotone color scheme is much more restrained in appearance. The dull black finish on the band and case is offset by a glossy surround on the face. It looks better than pictured.

This watch feels substantial and indeed weighs a bit but I don't think that will be a negative for most. I have a 7.25" wrist and the overall size is about right - it is thick but not ungainly and balances nicely with a comfortable fit from the band and curved case lugs. You may have some trouble getting this to fit under a buttoned dress shirt sleeve. I have not had it long enough to comment on the durability of the finishes.

The display is very legible and importantly for me, shows day, month and date in the same screen. Furthermore this watch offers multiple time zone display and has four alarms. It has a stopwatch but does not have a countdown timer (I can live without it). The backlight is excellent and the auto-on functionality is handy.

 "Great Watch!" 2009-03-05
By Casper
I just purchased the Casio MTG910Da-1v and I absolutely love it! I have been a huge G shock fan for awhile, and have progressed to atomic solar. I initially started looking at the Oceanus line and the higher end MTG Analog and/or Ana-digi atomic solar watches. Those were all a bit pricey for my tastes. I wanted something with a metal band and with the raised bezel so it keeps the crystal protected. This watch fit the bill and was substantially less in price!

Pros: Atomic accuracy - just for kicks, I logged on to the atomic clock website a few times throughout the day and the watch was dead on to the second!, solar power, durable G Shock quality, multiple time zones. Comes in handy as I have relatives in other countries.

Cons: Only two - It could use a count down timer, and instead of the time recorder feature, they could have given it a data bank for phone numbers.

In response to some reviews that I read before purchasing this watch: link removal was not hard at all and in fact, I appreciated that Casio opted for the spring loads instead of pressure for connecting them. A small flat tip screw driver and it was a cinch.

The manual is a bit crazy, but I guess because I have owned several Casio's over the years, I barely utilized it, and found setting the watch up to be quite simple. They are all very similar in how you program them. I suppose if this was your first run at a Casio, then I can see how it might become frustrating.

 "Poor,Poor,Poor" 2009-11-27
By Joel Verbrugge
I bought this watch to replace a worn out, super, now collectors item Casio TS-100 [815]. For the first three months this watch performed quite well. Then it quickly and steadily went sour. Basic functions like beeps and lighting would send the watch into "recover" mode. Now even with NOTHING running it needs to be exposed to bright light for 2 hours or more a week to simply not reset, yes reset. I'm wondering is it really Saturday morning 12 A.M? This watch is truly flawed. The solar recharge system is highly inefficient.I bought this watch for its 5 alarms, now I cant even use one. If that wasn't enough the excess band holder is way too large, I couldn't even count how many times it came out.

 "SOLAR BATTERY CHARGING PROBLEMS" 2008-10-27
By J. Nakawatase (LA, Calif)
I PURCHASED THIS CASIO SOLAR WATCH 14 MONTHS AGO. ALL THE BLOGS YOU READ ABOUT SOME OF THE CASIO SOLAR WATCHES HAVING BATTERY ISSUES ARE TRUE. THE SYMPTOMS START WITH HITTING EITHER THE LUMINISCENT BUTTON OR THE MODE BUTTON AND THE WATCH WILL GO INTO A RECOVERY MODE. AFTER IT GOES INTO A RECOVERY MODE THE LIGHT FUNCTION AND ANY FUNCTION THAT REQUIRES A BEEP (LIKE THE ALARM OR SIGNAL FUNCTIONS WILL NOT WORK) UNTIL THE RECOVERY MODE STOPS. THE MANUAL SAYS THAT RECOVERY MODE SIGNIFIES THAT THE BATTERY NEEDS CHARGING EVEN THOUGH THE BATTERY INDICATOR SHOWS A FULL CHARGE ON THE BATTERY. I HAVE CHARGE THIS WATCH IN SUNLIGHT FOR DAYS AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST. NEXT I REPLACED THE BATTERY WITH HOPES THAT MY WATCH HAD A DEFECTIVE BATTERY WHEN PURCHASED, UNFORTUNATELY THE NEW BATTERY DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I SHOULD HAVE PAID MORE ATTENTION TO THE BLOGS ON THE NET THAT OWNERS OF CASIO SOLAR WATCHES HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS WITH NO TECHNICAL SOLUTION FROM CASIO. I HAVE OWNED G-FORCE WATCHES FOR 20 YEARS AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE BATTERY ONLY CASIO'S. I THOUGHT A SOLOR WATCH THAT DIDN'T NEED BATTERY REPLACEMENT FOR MANY YEARS WOULD BE A WELCOME BENEFIT. MY ADVICE IS BE CAUTIOUS WHEN MAKING A DECISION ABOUT THE SOLOR MODELS AND DO YOUR RESEARCH. I HAVE DISCARDED MY CASIO SOLAR AND PURCHASE A NEW CASIO G SHOCK MODEL G2900F1V WITH A 10 YEAR BATTERY. WHEN A BATTERY WILL LAST 10 YEARS WHO NEEDS SOLOR ANYWAY

First, let me say this is one of two identical watches I purchased. The first runs like a champ! The second one has issues. I gave the first watch to my dad and it runs like a house-afire. The one I kept for myself goes blank; resets itself and sometimes fails to respond to commands. I don't know why this is but it'll have to go back to Casio for service.

 "Dressy/Stainless version of the Mudman GW9000A-1" 2009-09-14
By Mr. Scott A. Webb (Federal Way, Wa)
This watch is the same as the Mudman GW9000A-1 except for a metal case and band/plastic plated to look like metal instead of the GW9000's heavy black resin bezel and band.

This makes for a very versatile, tough, and fully featured watch that looks more dressy than the Mudman. I've read that the plating (or is it painted) on some of the plastic can wear down to show the plastic underneath, but I've seen no evidence of that at all. On the contrary, my watch has seen the some of the same abuse that killed my non-Gshock watches and has come through w/out a scratch.

It has a great feature set. If you've ever had a Casio, you know how easy they are to learn to use. A feature I didn't think I needed, but have come to love is the auto el feature. It automatically flashes the light on for just over a second if you look at the watch in the dark.

This watch is also cool because you can see the time of day when in in countdown timer mode.

This is a great watch if you want: solar charging, atomic time setting, world time, stopwatch, and countdown timer with a light. You can't go wrong with this watch. Looking for something more blue collar? Try the GW9000A.

 "Great watch!" 2009-09-02
By William Dunn (Hillsborough, NJ)
I have been a Casio G-Shock wearer for as long as I can remember. My wife said I was in need of updating my old black resin g-shock with something nicer. I looked and searched even the Casino web site for the features that I needed. This watch fits them all. I like to wear this watch even more than my Tag. You could not go wrong with this watch. I did need to resize it. Took out 2 links and it fits perfectly.

"Nice, sporty watch that does its job well" 2009-06-29
By wrxsting (SF Bay Area)
I wanted a relatively lightweight watch to wear for playing tennis and other outdoor activities. This one seemed to fit my criteria.

Pros:

- very lightweight compared to my Omega

- smallest of most of the mens G-Shock watches (for my small wrist)

- solar-powered

- atomic time-keeping

Cons:

- side buttons somewhat difficult to access (but that could be a good thing)

- more expensive (on Amazon) than the other G-Shock watches even though the retail price is the same as the others ($150)

Overall, a very nice watch for the price.

 "Stylish and Rugged" 2009-03-19
By Geoffrey S. Berrios (Atlanta, GA USA)
Great watch for the money! You get the superb Casio functions and options (Atomic, Solar, Stop Watch, 5 Alarms, Timer, & World Time) combined with stylish looks with the all metal band and mostly metal case. Should last for years if any of my previous Casio watches are an indication of durability.
